On this date we were the chosen DJ service provider for NBC10's annual wedding giveaway worth $40,000. We were honored to be chosen to be apart of this event, which was held in the grand ballroom at the Crowne Plaza - Warwick, RI. The lucky couple chosen for this marvelous ceremony was Jen and Eric Rosenthal.
During this ceremony we were introduced to some new traditions.
Below are some of the Filipino and Jewish traditions used during Jen and Eric's wedding.
Sponsors - The sponsors are men and women whom the bride and groom respect and admire. They attest to their readyness for marriage. They are often close friends or aunt and uncles of the family. In the Philippines, they are the official witnesses of the state and they sign the marriage license. Worldwide, their participation is symbolic of the wisdom and support they shall offer the new couple. The number of sponors can vary from a single couple to many couples.
Duing the ceremony they also have several traditions:
The Chuppah - The ceremony takes place under the Chuppah which has no walls. It symbolizes the home they will create, building walls with love and friendship, and open so that family and friends always will feel welcome.
Candle Ceremony - According to Filipino custom, they represent the lights of heritage, tradition, and love with which the couple has been blessed. The center candle is a sign that a new family has been formed blending all of the love, traditions, and experiences they have shared with their individual families.
Coin Ceremony - They represent the abundance and blessing in the couple's lives which will now be shared between them.
During the exchange of rings and vows:
Veil Ceremony - The veil is placed over the shoulders of the couple to symbolize their union and being "clothed as one" in unity. Like the Chuppah it represents the home they will build together.
Cord Ceremony - The Cord is a symbol of the couple's bond that they are no longer two, but one in their unity. It is one continuous silked cord draped around the couple over the veil, symbolizing an infinite bond of togetherness, a union that lasts a lifetime.
Breaking of the Glass - At the conclusion the groom smashes a glass with his foot. It can symbolize the marriage lasting as long as the glass is broken - forever, remembering those suffering in moments of joy. Guests yell "Mazel Tov" which means congratulations.
Wedding Reception:
Hora - A popular dance form, which is conducted at most Jewish weddings. The bride and groom are lifted above the shoulders of guests. While sitting on chairs, the couple may wave handkerchiefs to each other or hold ends of one. A wide circle of guests is formed around the couple, dancing clockwise and anticlockwise.
Blessing for the Bread, Wine & Special Occasions - The wedding meal begins over the challah, an elaborately braided bread, and a cup of wine. These include the HaMotzi for the bread and HaGafen for the wine. The last blessing is the Shehecheyanu for all special occasions. These are the most frequently said Hebrew blessings.
Sayaw ng Pera - Also known as the "money dance" another Filipino tradition that offers guests the opportunity to offer best wishes and make a contribution to the newlyweds future together. Guests who wish to dance with the bride or groom are welcom to use their pins. A long dance is considered good luck for a long marriage.
We also got to play a wide range of music during the night.
